LICORICE

Licorice is the unsung hero of the confectionery world. It’s been around for over 4000 years and even some of our most historical figures consumed licorice for it’s medicinal benefits. Napoleon loved it so much, it is said his teeth turned black from the juices.

It all starts with the licorice plant’s root, yes licorice is a plant, it’s botanical name is Glycyrrhizin if you don’t believe me! Now this is no ordinary root, because what makes the licorice root so special is the sweet-tasting compound, anethole, found within it. This aromatic, unsaturated other compound is also found in anise, fennel and several other herbs, with that lovely sweet taste coming from glycyrrhizin, a compound known to be up to 50 times sweeter than sugar.

But you said it was for me before…

There are more than 300 different compounds in licorice, some of which have antiviral and antimicrobial properties. In fact licorice root powder’s biggest use is actually within medicine and only it’s third biggest use being confectionary.

Ancient clay tablets describe licorice as the “elixir of life” for it’s cure-all characteristics.

  • Boosts the immune system

  • Is a mild pain reliever

  • Aids endurance

  • Activates the pancreas

  • Strengthens the respiratory system

  • Aids digestion

  • Cures ulcers

  • And even fights tooth decay

Unfortunately modern methods of production are able to substitute synthetic substances for licorice that don’t have the sam therapeutic benefits.

Organic licorice, on the other hand, adheres to traditional methods of growing and making licorice that maintains the taste and the health benefits of this ancient herb.

So what’s so good about OUR licorice?

Well we are certified organic and been creating the delicious stuff since 2001 and have been told that we are quite good at it!

And that’s not just Mum telling me!

We even have a Guinness Book of Records for the longest continuous rope of licorice because hey, why not!

Originally the record was 10m which we thought was lame. So we did 244m and then a European liquorice company did 519m and we thought we’d have a blossoming competitive relationship with these guys so we did 612m and we haven’t heard from them since…
